Austin, Texas, has a vibrant live music scene and has more music venues per capita than any other U.S. city. Austin's music scene mainly concerns the many nightclubs on the premises of 6th Street, but the highlight is probably the annual music, film and multimedia festival South by Southwest (SXSW) called.

SXSW officially started in 1987, a native of Austin as the Battle of the Bands and is centered around the downtown Austin Convention Center. It has become athe most important music festivals in the United States, with more than thousands of artists from around the world playing in over seventy locations in Austin over four days in the month of March. Largely an industry-based event, SXSW has gained the reputation of the place in search of new, current and emerging bands to enter the sector, and especially British bands to break the U.S. market. Acts have achieved the fame of mass, after playing sets at SXSW are The White Stripes in 2001, and the Britishemo-punk band Gallows, the festival by storm in 2007.

SXSW 2007 was a year older, and has seen more than 2,000 groups in Austin to take between March 14 and 18. Highlights were a stand-out series of The Rapture, Cold War Kids and Kings of Leon. David Byrne, former Talking Heads and The Who Pete Townshend were among the speakers of the event (Townshend then moved to a guest appearance, joining The Fratellis on stage and presented his trademark windmill guitar).English punk legends The Buzzcocks played a rough number, as well as U.S. punk icon Iggy & The Stooges.
